As with all dog food recipes the first thing we are going to look at are the first five ingredients. The first five ingredients are a good indication of the quality of the dog food. When looking at the first five ingredients you want to make sure there is plenty of meat and grains are minimal.
Acana Pacifica Cat Food First Five Ingredients:
- Salmon Meal
- Russet Potato
- Fresh Deboned Salmon
- Peas
- Fresh Deboned Herring
Salmon is the clean tissue of un-decomposed whole salmon or salmon cuttings. It is an excellent source of high quality protein, calcium, phosphorous and long chain Omega 3 fatty acids, which are critical for healthy skin, coat and proper body function.
Potatoes are whole, freshly cooked potatoes that include the skins.
Chicken is the clean combination of skin and flesh without the bone derived from whole chickens. This is the same deboned chicken we eat and is free of added growth hormones and steroids. It is an excellent source of high quality protein and fatty acids and is the first ingredient in any of our chicken based diets for cats and dogs.
Peas are an excellent source of protein and fiber. They are a great representative of the "Green" vegetable group.
Herring is the clean tissue of undecomposed whole herring or herring parts. It is a source of protein and long chain Omega 3 fatty acids which are critical for healthy skin and coat, proper body function and enhanced learning of young puppies.

Chicken Meal: chicken which has been ground or otherwise reduced in particle size.
Potatoes are whole, freshly cooked, russet potatoes that include the skins.
Chicken is the clean combination of flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken- exclusive of feathers, heads, feet, and entrails.
Peas are a premium quality carbohydrate, rich in potassium and a highly digestible energy source.
Fish Meal - The clean, dried, ground tissue of undecomposed whole fish or fish cuttings, either or both, with or without the extraction of part of the oil. It must contain not more than 10% moisture. If it contains more than 3% salt (NaCl), the amount of salt must constitute a part of the product name, provided that in no case must the salt content of this product exceed 7%.
